Considerations when evaluating a Multi-User KVM Switch
What expansion options (for both your users/administrators and your servers) does this KVM switching solution offer?
What are the KVM switches' cable length limitations?
How much cabling is required?
What type of cable media does the KVM switch require - coax cable, single or dual
cat5, fiber optic. Some use more than one, for example cat5 and coax - an important topology consideration when considering cost and ease of installation.
What are it's multi-platform capabilities, and for non-PC environments does the KVM do keyboard mapping or allow you to use your native keyboard?
Does the level of security the KVM offers suit your needs?
What redundancy does the KVM offer if one of it's components were to go down? And how will a failure of any of the KVM switches/components affect your servers and your ability to control them?
How is KVM extension handled?
Does the KVM offer ip and in-band options?
What are the KVM's power cycling options?
All KVM's save your rack space, but how much differs greatly depending on the matrix topology of the KVM.

All-in-one 16-port switches combine the best of both worlds!
|
| Avocent's latest AutoView switches combine analog and IP-based KVM switching for local access from anywhere in the data center and IP-based access for extended or remote users. |
|
The AutoView 1000R is a 16-port KVM switch that supports a local user at the rack and an IP-based user anywhere in the data center or from any location across the globe.
|
|
The AVRIQ CAT 5 design cable interface works seamlessly between the AutoView switch and the server. This smart cable interface reduces cable bulk and eases re-configurations.
For complete system administration, Avocent's AVWorks advanced management software is bundled with each switch. AutoView also features the patented On-Screen Configuration and Activity Reporting (OSCAR) management tool for convenient point and click system configuration and server selection at the rack.

| ANY SERVER,
ANYWHERE, ANYTIME
|
The DS1800 provides
administrators complete access to an unlimited number of servers or
devices in the network from any location. By converting analog KVM
signals to a digital format, the DS1800 is able to send these signals
via the Internet to a user's PC anywhere in the world! A simple
graphical interface gives users point and click access to any server,
anywhere. There is virtually no limit to the number of computers a user
can connect to simultaneously. Each computer has its own window on the
user's PC desktop.
|
ADVANCED AUTHENTICATION AND
SECURITY FEATURES
Security is critical to any server installation.
That's why the DS1800 relies on an Authentication service to determine user
access rights and establish communication between users and DS1800 units. Simply
describe the configuration of computers and switches attached to the DS1800,
then determine which computers a user or group of users can manipulate. User
names and groups come directly from the Windows NT administration tools,
eliminating the need for redundant management systems.
| RELIABLE,
FLEXIBLE AND SCALABLE |
| The DS1800's decentralized,
intelligent components provide reliable user access to any system
server. This flexible, infinitely scalable system is field-upgradeable
and has no single point of failure. Industry-standard Ethernet 10/100
connectivity lets you place the DS1800 anywhere on the network without
concern for distance limitations. Servers and users can be placed in
convenient locations - even in separate areas. |
